The day that I was out the sun was shining bright, but it was a little windy making the course all the more challenging. My playing partner and I got a special rate because he was staying at the casino hotel, but for those not staying at the casino the regular rate that time of year is about $75 dollars, less if you want to try one of the twilight rates.

The pro shop was a little disappointing, nothing more than a box car out in the desert. But it was fully stocked with the latest gear. There is also a snack bar and attractive girls selling food and drink on the course. Our golf cart had a GPS built into it, so I didn’t have to guess how far to the nearest hazard or green.

When we got done, we went over to the casino to help the Indians with their cause.

One of the big attractions in Ballybunion, County Kerry is its Golf Club. It has a large membership and applicants usually have to wait a long time. This is the setting for Waterville Golf Club which has been in existence for over 100 years but only came to prominence after 1973 when the club was redeveloped and the course redesigned. Since then many of the world’s great golfers have played there and now it is always listed in the top 20 links courses in the world. Waterville was a favourite destination of Charlie Chaplin and visitors can see a statue of him on the seafront in the town.

A few miles outside Killorglin as you drive southwards, if you turn off to the right before you come to the village of Glenbeigh you will arrive at Dooks Golf Club. Dooks was redesigned and developed in 2002 and has been growing in popularity ever since. As well as a challenging eighteen hole course there is an excellent clubhouse complete with Bar and restaurant and a well stocked pro shop. The sandy fairways, gorse rough and stiff sea breeze present a unique challenge to most golfers.
